Book description: This large book is probably the most comprehensive one-volume encyclopedia of the art of painting ever published in the English language. In the Fourth Revised Edition hundreds of entries from the decade of the '70s have been added and up-dated. Included are such notable twentieth century painters as Blake, Corneille, Dine, Estes, Hockney, Kline, Jorn, Rauschenberg, Schiele, Stella, Still, Tápies, Tworkov, Vasarely, Vedova and Warhol, to name just a few.
In addition to biographies of the great painters of all time, the book includes lengthy sections on Chinese, Japanese, Persian and Indian painting, and informative articles on African art, Etruscan art, Egyptian art, cave painting, and numerous other categories covering all periods from prehistoric time to present day. There are also lucid explanations of the various movements in painting: Impressionism, Non-objective Art, Surrealism, Cubism, Minimal Art, Photo-Realisitm, Op Art, Pop Art, Action Painting, Conceptual Art, and so on. And there are entries about most of the world's finest art museums.
The illustrations have been selected with the greatest care and discrimination, gathered from all parts of the world- from places as remote as Korean and Teheran- and from hundreds of institutions and private collections as well. In many instances, agencies of foreign governments helped to track down special pictures. Among the paintings reproduced here are countless famous and familiar ones, but many lesser-known through equally fine works have been included.
Nearly all the abundant illustrations have been placed on the same page as the text reference, enabling the reader to see the painting that is being discussed. These illustrations have been printed with special care to ensure the finest quality of reproduction and to help make the Encyclopedia of Painting a beautiful art book as well as an important reference work.
The editor and contributing associates to this volume have attempted to establish a just proportion between the past and the present, the purely factual and the essentially critical, the Orient and the Occident, the specifically biographical entry and the general descriptive entry or definition. Features of special interest to both the general public and the student if art include an extensive section on the Orient (China, Japan, India, and Persia), a thoroughgoing but selective section on art in the United States, and an equally inclusive coverage of the many European and other countries contributing to the art of our own times.
